Enjoy the large country garden
For us one of the great joys of living in the country is being able to have a large garden. When you come to stay at Paradise Valley Lodge you too get to enjoy having a large garden - without any of the work!
Paradise Valley Lodge sits in a natural amphitheatre which provides us with 360 degree country views. To the south is the majestic Mt Ngongotaha which provides shelter from the southerly winds. In summer the mountain basks in the last of the evening sun and in winter it turns mystical when shrouded in mountain mist.
The garden is sited on a series of north facing river terraces running down to the Ngongotaha Stream. On the top terrace is the accommodation area and the older part of the garden. From this top terrace a long flight of stone walled steps lead down to the bottom lawn area. Each side of the steps is planted up in large mixed flower borders of roses and perennials. Glorious right throughout the summer months!
The bottom lawn is approximately ½ acre with a magnificent old walnut tree in the centre of it providing a wonderful shady picnic spot. The large lawn is a favourite with children of all ages (including adult ones) who enjoy being able to run around and play ball games.
From the bottom lawn there is a range of different pathways leading down to the Ngongotaha Stream. The gardens bordering the paths are a mixture of shrubs, rhododendrons and natives with lots of tree ferns invoking the spirit of a truly New Zealand country garden.
The stream is tree lined with a mixture of native and exotic trees bringing lots of birdlife into the garden. It is an idyllic spot to sit at the picnic table and listen to the burbling stream, or watch the waterfall while watching the fantails, tuis or bellbirds flit about.
